Couple more reviews

Today I thought I'd post a couple quick reviews of two very different books. One is more a YA fantasy while the other is geared toward younger children. Both are equally good.

UNDINE

Undine lives with her unconventional mother and baby brother Jasper. Her next door neighbor Trout is her best friend though she knows he has a crush on her.

One day what starts off as an odd feeling grows into a whisper. It's time to come home. It builds until one day Undine imagines putting together two scattered clouds, and ends up creating a massive thunderstorm.

This freaks her out. Who is she? And who is this person whispering to her?

I really enjoyed this book. I loved how the author, Penni Russon, shows the conflict growing within both Undine and Trout. I especially loved how she shows all this though the guy's POV. Maybe this is because I'm trying to do the same thing in my own paranormal. The author did a great job conveying the mixture of feelings running through not only Undine but Trout's head.

TRAVELS OF THELONIOUS

Thelodnious Chipmunk is a Talker-an animal who has inherited the gift of language-and he believes in humans. His desire leads him into a strange new world-where gangs and warlords prowl among the crumbling remains of civilization.

I love this book. It alternates between chapters of graphic novel and straight text. Right now I'm reading it to my son, who is enjoying the story of Thelodnious and the adventures he has while uncovering the secret's of Earth's past.

Both are Cybils nominated books.

I just read Travels of Thelonious last night. It was so cute and fun! I liked it a lot more than I'd expected. I can see why it would be a great book to read aloud.
